The Internet of the new world
From ARPANET to TCP/IP and the World Wide Web created by Tim Berners-Lee, the last three decades of the Internet have represented one of the greatest advances in modern history. The WWW democratized access to knowledge, made communication easier, opened international markets and allowed millions of companies and creators to reach audiences they could never otherwise have reached. For several generations, the Internet quickly became synonymous with freedom of information, collaboration and innovation.
That promise remains very real. Yet the very nature of the Internet is changing. Without fully realizing it, we have gradually moved from a network designed to share information to an immense economy in which data has become one of the most coveted assets on the planet.
This transformation is not the result of any one event, but rather of a continuous evolution. Over the years, technology companies discovered that the real value lay not only in the services they developed, but also in the data generated by their users. Governments, too, understood that data could become a strategic asset for improving public services, strengthening certain analytical and control capabilities, or supporting national security. Meanwhile, organizations of every size accelerated their digital transformation, multiplying applications, collaborative platforms, connected devices and, more recently, artificial intelligence systems.
Every search performed, document shared, movement recorded, photograph or video published, and every interaction with a platform or an artificial intelligence now contributes to feeding a phenomenal quantity of data. Individually, this information often seems innocuous. Collectively (and cross-referenced), it constitutes an ever more faithful representation of our behaviors, our habits, our interests, our businesses and, at times, our lives.
It would nonetheless be simplistic to conclude that this evolution is negative. Data today makes it possible to advance medical research, improve transportation, optimize business operations, accelerate scientific discovery and develop artificial intelligence capable of assisting people in a growing number of fields. The benefits are real and considerable.
This evolution does, however, force us to rethink our relationship with the digital world. For a long time, we regarded the Internet as a space for publishing and consulting content. Today, we must also see it as an immense economic ecosystem in which data, knowledge and artificial intelligence models are becoming the principal resources for value creation.
In this environment, organizations can no longer ask only which technologies they wish to adopt. They must also ask what knowledge they produce, what data they share, where it is stored, who accesses it, under what conditions it is used and how they can preserve their intellectual property, their competitive advantage and the trust of their customers.
This reflection goes well beyond traditional cybersecurity. It bears directly on knowledge governance, digital sovereignty, identity, communications, the uses of artificial intelligence and, more broadly, the ability of organizations to retain control over their information assets. As artificial intelligence becomes the principal consumer and producer of digital content, these questions take on a strategic importance that will only grow in the coming years.
It is also essential to recall that an organization does not necessarily lose its autonomy because it uses modern technologies. It loses it when it no longer controls the knowledge, the data and the processes that constitute its true value. The difference is fundamental. The issue is not to slow innovation or to reject digital platforms. It is to allow companies to continue benefiting from these technologies while retaining their freedom of choice, their capacity to decide and control over their strategic assets.
