Cybersecurity and biometrics: protecting far more than data

Since the mid-1990s, biometric technologies have taken an ever-larger place in our daily lives. They allow a phone to be unlocked with a face, a building to be entered with a fingerprint, a user to be authenticated by voice, or an identity to be confirmed using physical or behavioral characteristics. In healthcare, research, pharmaceuticals and critical infrastructure, they also extend to far more sensitive information, notably genetic data. This evolution brings real benefits in terms of security, efficiency and ease of use. It nonetheless raises a fundamental question: are we protecting this information in proportion to its value?

Unlike a password or an access card, biometric data generally cannot be replaced once it has been compromised. A fingerprint, a facial feature, a voice signature or a genetic profile stays with a person throughout their life. This reality gives such data exceptional value, but also an equally significant responsibility for the organizations that collect, use or store it.

The more organizations reduce the unnecessary circulation of sensitive data, strengthen the security of their communications, control access and rigorously govern their information assets, the more they reduce the opportunities for exploitation by malicious actors.

This reflection goes well beyond regulatory compliance. It bears directly on the trust that employees, customers, partners and citizens place in the organizations that ask them to share part of their identity. Modern cybersecurity no longer consists solely of preventing a computer intrusion. It consists of durably preserving the integrity of individuals, of their information and of the relationship of trust that binds an organization to its ecosystem.
