Claiming that artificial intelligence will “never” replace human judgment is a reassuring idea. It reminds us that the most important decisions still rest on the experience, the context, the emotions, the values, and the accountability of the people who make them.
For now, that claim remains well founded. Artificial intelligence models can produce remarkably relevant analyses, but they remain incapable of fully grasping the nuances of a situation the way a human being would. Should we conclude, however, that this reality will still be the same in five, ten, or twenty years? The history of technology invites caution whenever we assert that certain limits will be permanent.
Since the dawn of computing, every generation has pushed back frontiers that were believed to be impassable. The next advances will likely depend less on the power of the models than on the quality of the knowledge passed on to them, the governance put in place, the richness of the documented contexts, the feedback mechanisms that make it possible to evaluate the quality of the results, and the ability of organizations to turn their collective experience into usable knowledge.
This evolution will not diminish the role of humans. It will instead change the nature of their decisions by giving them access to analyses, accumulated experience, and scenarios that would have been impossible to examine manually.
An executive who has the benefit of an artificial intelligence capable of analyzing thousands of comparable scenarios, detecting trends invisible to the human eye, and proposing several well-argued avenues will always retain responsibility for the final decision. That decision, however, can then be made with a far more complete understanding of the situation.
Human judgment will not be replaced by artificial intelligence. It will be enriched by its ability to analyze, compare, memorize, and learn at a scale no human being can reach alone.
Setting artificial intelligence against human judgment is probably a false opposition. The highest-performing organizations of tomorrow will not seek to replace their decision-makers with machines. They will instead seek to develop artificial intelligence capable of becoming a genuine thinking partner, fed by reliable knowledge, documented experience, and rigorous governance.
The organizations that will get the most out of this evolution will not necessarily be the ones using the most powerful models. They will be the ones that have learned to turn their experience, their knowledge, their decisions, and their results into a structured information asset, capable of sustainably feeding their artificial intelligence.
